Just when you think you’ve heard the story of a boy named Peter and a girl named Wendy, along comes The Island of Lost Children, a book for children ages 9-12. This is a Wendy whose parents have to work all the time so she is responsible for her brothers JJ and Michael. JJ is very bratty all the time. Michael has autism and is bratty some of the time.
Peter lives on the island with his friends, the “lost” children–they worked together to build the island’s roller coasters and constructed boats that float down the Mystery River to the lagoon of snarky mermaids. Wendy’s former classmate, Lily, lives with her friends on the other side of the island, and everyone is a little intimidated by the “weird fairy” Belatresse. Wendy has no idea that Michael has his own special connection to the island.
When he’s not on the island, Peter hangs around Wendy’s window waiting to hear another of her stories, even though she doesn’t see him there, and sometimes he goes in search of his missing nemesis, the pirate Everett Steed.
